Black Messiah D'angelo

Field Notes

After a decade of anticipation, the arrival of this record felt nothing short of mythical. D'Angelo burst onto the scene in 1995 with "Brown Sugar" and followed up five years later with the iconic Voodoo, leaving listeners yearning for his smoky, soul-filled vocals and warm Wurlitzer melodies. His music has a unique ability to transport you to church while simultaneously stirring the desire to sin. Musically, his arrangements are contemporary yet deeply rooted in the rich traditions of rhythm and blues, gospel, and jazz. D'Angelo embodies the archetype of a soul who has made a pact with the devil, seemingly indifferent to the whims of popular culture. He offers us a record on his own terms, and for that, we are profoundly grateful to have it in our collections
